Surviving the City

I'm a little blacker than the other sheep

The Irish Hunger Memorial

The Irish Hunger Memorial is designed to raise public awareness of the events that led to the famine of 1845-52 and to encourage efforts to address current and future hunger worldwide. One and a half million Irish were lost through famine related death and the Diaspora. The design expresses a desire to react and respond to changing world events without losing its focus on the projects intent. The Memorial, designed by Brian Tolle, contains stones from each of Irelands 32 counties and is elevated on limestone. Along the base are bands of texts, seperated by layers of imported Killkenny limestone. The text, which combines the history of the Great Famine with contemporary reports on world hunger, is cast as shadow onto illuminated frosted glass panels. Whether Irish or not, this place is really a wonderful escape from the city. A bit of green looking over the water, it is certainly beautiful and relaxing.

The Living Room

My friend Joe calls this place “the worst bar ever.” That may or may not be because he worked there for a short time. I can assure you it is NOT, in fact, its quite lovely. Not the kind of place you would wander in for a drink and stay, but the kind of place you might head to hear a particular artist or band. The back room is an intimate setting for a show, with small tables and candles and its own bar. Last night we heard Jim Campilongo play. Not a name you most likely recognize right away, but chances are, youve heard him play without even knowing it. Hes worked with Norah Jones, Cake, and everyone in between. Billboard Magazine calls him, “an American treasure,” and I would agree. His music is darkly romantic and his personality is so awkward, it makes awkward people feel awkward. I loved him best for this.

Well behaved women rarely make history.

The Blind Pig
An establishment used for selling and drinking alcoholic beverages during the period of the United States history known as Prohibition when selling or buying alcohol was illegal.  The end of Prohibition was marked by President FDR famously announcing, “WHAT AMERICA NEEDS NOW IS A DRINK.”
*This place is not as cool as it sounds. Although it was 3am when we wandered in, so giving it another shot is an option. And speaking of shots, the bartender served me two on the house along with a beer. So maybe it has its perks.

Old Castle Pub

So lets say, hypothetically, you had been out drinking till 5am with your best friend, and as a result, slept until 3pm the following day. Upon waking, you realized the only possible cure for the worst hangover youve ever had in your life was a proper irish breakfast. Grab your over sized shades and head to Old castle pub. Their brekkie is ten shades of fierce! Two eggs, grilled tomato, sausage, irish bacon (grilled ham), and black and white pudding. Wash it down with a hot cup of tea and you will be feeling great with just enough time to shower, change, and head out again for the night!

Ottos Shrunken Head

Two New Yorkers and one Pittsbugher got together and made this bar. Its tacky, and its too bright inside, and it almost feels like your in the basement of a frat house. That being said, its still a lot of fun!! Bree and I went on rebel night. Nothing but Rockabilly music, tattoos, and dancers. Our favorite part was the old school photo booth!!

Westsider books is a little store with a lot of soul. They offer first editions at incredible prices and very unique finds if youre willing to climb to the ceiling and dig. They have a small well chosen music selection in the back. I found Patsy Clines greatest hits (my favorite of all time) for $2.50! They are cash only, so be prepared for that.

These bagels are what legends are made of. I had the blueberry for breakfast this morning. It was fresh, warm, and really fucking tasty. If you go here, expect to take your bagel to go as there are no tables and you wouldnt want to stay anyway because its HOTTER THAN HELL in there.

ZABARS

Oh. My. God. If their was a holy grail of grocery stores, this is it! This place has every high end food product you could ever want. And dont even get me started on the cheese section! Triple creams, french bleu, aged cheddars, and Jesus I could go on. When I die, I want to be burried in Zabars. (as long as thats Kosher)

*** THIS was a great thrift store right in midtown between 9th and 10th avenue! I found two vests, a skirt, a belt, a bag, two records and a cd for 5 dollars. The ladies who work there are really rude though, just fyi. And there are no dressing rooms so you have one of two options. Either just go ahead and buy it, or get comfortable and try it on in the isle. Every else seems to do the same thing, so there are no funny stares
